The Decision to Cancel

We had to cancel football practice yesterday due to the threat of severe weather in our area (we were under a Tornado Watch due to remnants of Hurricane Beryl coming through our area).

The decision was made when the sun was shining, and no storms were imminent.

Most of the coaches, including me, wanted to move forward with practice based on the data we had at the time.

However, our school’s leadership and the director of our youth football programs felt differently and asked us to cancel practices.

I am grateful for their leadership and after reflecting upon it, know they made the right call.

  • There is no reason to risk the safety of youth athletes and their families
  • Missing one practice 4 weeks before our first game won’t impact the season

As it turns out, a small storm did push through during the time we would have practiced, which would have caused a lengthy delay because of the lighting.

Working with effective, impactful leaders is wonderful, especially when you know they are looking out for the best interest of you and everyone involved.
